News From the Community: Walking & Moving in Petersburg

Across the city of Petersburg, walking and other movement clubs are covering a lot of distance.  While Petersburg may have some challenging health outcomes to contend with — indeed a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation County Health Rankings & RoadMaps identified Petersburg as 133 out of 133 localities in its health outcomes ranking — chances are residents are more active than you think!

To increase the number of Petersburg residents engaged in physical activity and make a dent in the health disparities of the city, the Petersburg Wellness Consortium created the Million Mile Challenge. This challenge is a call to all residents to collectively move one million miles.

Since the start of the Petersburg Million Mile Challenge, more and more people have become active. Churches, community organizations, coworkers, and neighbors have come together to move as a community. As of now there are 17 movement teams (and growing!) which include walking, running, yoga, swimming, and more.

Most physical activity lasting 20 minutes equals one mile. Already moving? You can report these numbers online at the Million Mile Challenge via the American Heart Associations’ site. Want to start moving? Join an existing movement team or start one of your own.

Petersburg is on the move towards a Million Miles — and a more happy and healthy community!

The Petersburg Wellness Consortium (PWC) is a group of individuals, organizations, businesses, and community members who are working collectively to create a culture of health and wellness in the City of Petersburg.
