Giving Smart: #GivingTuesday

What is Giving Tuesday?

Tuesday, December 2nd marks the third annual #GivingTuesday, founded by the 92nd Street Y in New York City and the United Nations Foundation in 2012.  On the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday celebrates the season of giving in a different way.  It is an online movement that inspires people to give back ? rallying people around the globe to support causes they care about and using the hashtag #GivingTuesday to spread the word to friends and family.

In its first two years, Giving Tuesday grew from 2,500 to 7,000 participating organizations and from $12 million to $27 million in dollars raised.  Because this is an online movement, it has the ability to spread quickly.  This year, Giving Tuesday is anticipated to reach eight countries and regions and raise as much as $54 million from people, like you, who care about advancing innovative solutions and building stronger communities.  Whether you choose to give time or money, every gift counts!

Why should my organization participate?

Year-end can be crazy for donors and organizations alike.  You probably have several year-end activities planned and as we noted in our October post, it is prime giving season.  It can be overwhelming to consider taking on something new.  The decision to participate in Giving Tuesday, and at what level, will be different for everyone.

One of the biggest reasons for a nonprofit to participate is that a large amount of the marketing is being done for you.  Social media feeds are already filling up with information about #GivingTuesday.  As it has in the past, it is sure to get national attention through major news sources, as well.  Many celebrities are getting in the game, promoting their favorite charities.  It is also a movement that engages the for-profit sector, as it provides significant awareness for their charitable endeavors. All of this leads to donors, new and old, who will be looking to give on that day — you just have to get in front of them.
