Tell us about yourself.
My name is Katie Bowman and I serve as the Communications Associate at The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia. I also assist with the strategy and marketing efforts of GiveRichmond.org, a website administered by TCF that provides comprehensive data about hundreds of local nonprofits, enabling individuals and companies to make informed giving decisions. In 2012, I graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in communications/public relations and started working in Richmond in the corporate event planning industry. In 2014, I transitioned to my role at TCF and feel so grateful to serve the nonprofit sector in this capacity.
What is the focus of your work and the need you are addressing?
In my role I assist with the foundation’s communications, media relations and marketing efforts to inform the community of the great things happening in the Greater Richmond nonprofit sector. The Community Foundation strives to create a stronger and more vibrant region, now and for generations to come, and I have the unique opportunity to share that mission and vision with community members through social media outlets, videos, newsletters and printed literature.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
I love learning more about nonprofits in our region. In my role I have the opportunity to meet donors and local nonprofits and communicate their stories to the community – what an honor! Richmond is such an incredible city to work and live, and I am happy to boast about the work so many are doing to make our city great. (Also working alongside a fantastic team makes my job that much sweeter).
What are some major challenges you have faced and how you handled them?
Our team’s greatest challenge would be time – as with most nonprofits, it always seems that there is so much to do! Creating an effective editorial calendar and scheduling social media posts and content have helped me better prioritize my time and complete my work more efficiently.
What’s coming next for your organization that really excites you?
This is the 5th year of the Amazing Raise 36-hour giving challenge – how amazing! Our team is working to orchestrate the first ever Amazing Raise Kickoff event happening June 2 to train and encourage nonprofit leaders before the Amazing Raise happening Sept. 17-18.
We anticipate this to be the best year yet and hope to raise over $2 Million for nonprofits in our region. If you’re a nonprofit leader and haven’t registered for the event, you can do so here.
How are you leveraging ConnectVA to achieve your mission?
The GiveRichmond team works collaboratively with ConnectVA to cross-promote our upcoming events and campaigns. This partnership has been a great way for our organization to reach a broader audience and gain exposure in the nonprofit community. I am especially partial to the ConnectVA Community Calendar as it provides an easy to access, thorough database of events happening with many local nonprofits. Additionally, I learned so much from the ConnectVA’s recent Social Media Conference and look forward to attending next year!
